Description

Low-Powered DIY Portable 8-Watt Soldering Iron

A soldering iron supplies heat to melt solder so that it can flow into the joint between two workpieces. A soldering iron is composed of a heated metal tip and an insulated handle. This battery-powered soldering iron used a 4.5V (3*1.5V AA) battery to operate the soldering iron.

How to Solder

  1. File off any dirt, rust or paint on the part you wish to solder.
  2. Heat the part with the soldering iron.
  3. Apply rosin-based solder to the part and melt it with the soldering iron.
  4. Wait for the soldering to cool and harden before moving the soldering part.

Awesome Product but a little extra is required

After using the product for over 2 weeks now, I can say that the product works quite good as long as you understand what it requires to function properly. To save sometime the time of going through trial and error, I have mentioned key points below:
    1) 3 x AA cells do not work so dont waste your time with them
    2) The product runs at 4.5V and has a power rating of 8W so the current that it needs to draw is 1.7A. AA cells cannot provide such current.
    3) get Honki 18650 3.7V 1200mah lithium ion cells. at least 2 but more the better. I got them from makerbazaar.
    4) connecting them in parallel makes the soldering iron work but any small wind will cause the soldering iron to cool down so its not as effective.
    5) get a XL6009 voltage booster. set the output to 5V. Connect the 2 cells in series and then connect those to the XL6009 voltage booster. output should be connected to the soldering iron. voltage to the soldering iron should not exceed 5V ! to avoid damage to the soldering iron.
    6) Soldering iron gets working real quick and depending on the capacity of the cells should get you 1 hour of continuous usage
    Hope this helps
